    Yancey County was created in 1833 from portions of Buncombe and Burke Co., NC. At that time, it included what is now Avery, Madison, Mitchell, Watauga, present Yancey and portions of old Buncombe and Burke County in western North Carolina.     Mitchell County is bordered to the north by the Appalachian Trail, to the south by the Blue Ridge Parkway and to the west by the Toe River. With its vast deciduous forests, Mitchell occupies the central part of the Toe River Valley. It is located northeast of Asheville and southwest of Boone in the northwestern mountains of North Carolina. Here in the mountains, people claim to be from their community, not the nearest city such as Bakersville, Spruce Pine or Burnsville.
